Something Special
Most people's memories of Bute (just off the west coast of Scotland) is of family trips to Rothsay in the summer holidays, so it may not be the first place to spring to mind when looking for somewhere special to get married. At least that was the case, before Stella McCartney chose the splendour of the Mount Stuart stately home on Bute for her summer wedding in 2003. Few know that, just along the road, Allison and Andrew Gibb were renovating what is now Chandlers Hotel - a luxury hotel which has recently started catering for weddings. With views over the Firth of Clyde and a great spot for beach weddings at Ascog Bay, this venue is ideal for those looking to give their guests an experience of something different. And with only 48 weddings taking place on the island in 2005, you can be sure of a fairly unique wedding!
Only 90 minutes from Glasgow and Prestwick airports across the Firth of Clyde, and at Chandlers they host weddings as if they were for their own family. All they ask the couples to do is to sort the legalities! Allison told The SWD: ''We're now getting very accustomed to wedding parties booking the entire hotel for several days.''
When Stella McCartney chose Mount Stuart for her wedding, local tourism chiefs were thrilled with the publicity for Bute. Now councillors are delighted with the high-class accommodation offered at Chandlers.
''The understated luxury of Chandlers has really added something to Bute, helping to draw even more tourists to Scotland's most accessible isle,'' said Len Scoullar, of Argyll & Bute Council, who has lived on the isle for 40 years. Formerly a girls' school at the end of the 19th century, the listed building has been sympathetically redeveloped into a 21st century hotel by Allison and Andrew who moved to Bute with the idea of starting a sales training business but became hoteliers instead.
