IN SCOTLAND WE'RE lucky that there's an abundance of great wedding photographers to choose from, catering for every style and taste imaginable. You will probably have an idea of what you would like or expect from your photographs, so look for a photographer who shares a similar vision and who you feel comfortable with
Research
There are many photography styles, from
formal to reportage, but remember it's not simply about one picture,
rather a whole album. Some photographers will send brochures or direct
you to their websites, and that way you can narrow your choice to two
or three. Start by looking at their adverts to identify the individual
styles of different photographers.
Meeting
Weekends are a photographer's busiest time, so if you can arrange a
visit to their studio mid-week to see their portfolio. Your
photographer will be directing you and your guests at the wedding so if
you do not like their personality, don't book them. If you don't have a
good rapport, it will show in your wedding photographs. Some
photography companies have several photographers, therefore it's best
to establish who will be taking the pictures on the day and ask if you
can meet them. Determine what packages they offer; the most basic start
at around 30 photographs. Photographers have a wealth of experience and
usually a vast knowledge of venues and nearby scenic locations, so keep
in close contact with them for inspiration.
Booking
Do not feel pressured into booking a
photographer if you aren't certain; after having an initial meeting
give yourself time to make a decision. Ensure that you leave plenty of
time between the wedding and booking the photographer of your choice so
that there's a good chance they are available. Therefore, to avoid
disappointment once you have found your ideal man (or woman), book them
as soon as you can. You should receive a contract from your
photographer, which you should sign only after reading through it
carefully; the contract allows you to see in detail everything that you
have agreed upon. This is simply a written confirmation of what you
have agreed, including the number and type of prints, albums,
cancellation policies and payments.
Quality
Wedding photography takes a great
amount of patience, tolerance, and both human and technical skill;
lucky then that the quality and range of styles available from Scottish
photographers is internationally acknowledged as being among the best
in the world. Check out our directory of suppliers for listings of
Scottish photographers.
Copyright
Remember that you will need permission
from your photographer if you want to reproduce your wedding pictures.
Generally, your photographer will keep the negatives because any
reprints will be under their creative control.
